So the old folks say. The old folks say, The days are duller, The sweelesi songs are left unsung, The spring was full of sceni and color, Long, long ago, when we w ere young. The cheerful man or woman is a I blessing to cvc'i y one with whom : he or she comes in contact There is no virtue in the world comp.ira i ble to that of cheerfulness, and no ', person more welcome than one i who always has a smile and a , pleasant w in d. They are the salt of the earth. Nobody, though hisburdens may jhave been more grievous than the burdens of Job, has any right to I be doleful and add his bit of shad i ow io all the shadow s of the world. ! Cheerfulness is a duly incumbent ' on us all alike. It is just as much i of a duty as honesty and justice and ; temperance. W'e owe it lo our : selves and to others to look on i the bright side. I Once upon a time the writer ' knew a cheerful girl. Once he i heard her silvery laugh and through all his life il will echo in his memo ry, a sweet and beautiful lesson, j Her name was Mary, and she was ; a waitress in a restaurant, working hard many long hours each day, j for a miserably small sum of money ! paid to her each Saturday night, j She lived in ihe meatiest surround ings and there was certainly very ! little in her life to inspire cheer fulness. Her mother was dead and her i lather was a drunken outcast. Sometimes months went by with out her seeing him, and when he ; did come home, it was only to ap proach her and deman'd money i with w hich to drink. The girl's grandmother lived with her and kept their little home. Willi the old lady and the young nirl lived one other person. Fifteen years before an older ; sister had died and left a helpless babe for Mary lo provide for. The babe, it soon developed, was never '. to have any mind. The child had not even the power lo coiurol its limbs, and all its life was spent, sitting in an infant's high chair, staring with vacant eyes around the poor, but neat, little home. The night the writer saw the in terior of this home, it was snowing outdoors and the air w as bitter cold. Mary, the little waitress, ! swung open the door and burst in, returning from her work. The snow clung to her dark hair. I ler eyes were bright and dancing, She laughed, and it was like the song of a bird al sunrise, joyful, ringing ' and sweet. ; And the helpless, impotent little thing, perched mournfully in ihe tall high chair, glanced up as that merry laugh rang out, and there came a lighl into the vacant eyes that almost seemed a smile. Even there was the magic of that angelic cheerfulness able to wake a re sponse. What say you, was the world not a better place 10 live in, because of this good girl, who shed sun .hine over such a dreary waste of mi? ery and squalor? Cheerfulness is ihe gixaiesi thing in ihe win Id; for il includes all oilier virtues. Who that has not charily would l e cheerful? Who thai has an uneasy conscience can always smile? Who thai is selfish and sordid can lind a pleas ant word to say lo all he mecis? l.ook to il well. J'.eci'luliiess is a duty, and il you are not cheerful something is wrong wiih yuii, somewhere, somehow. Sunny South.
